MINUTES OF THE GILBERT EDUCATIONAL CABLE ACCESS GOVERNING BOARD

SEPTEMBER 22, 2005,

MEMBERS PRESENT: Roger Carter, Michael Holland (Vice Chair), Tim Keefe (Chair), Linda Tunick, Cathy Templeton

MEMBERS ABSENT: None.

OTHERS PRESENT: Councilmember Crozier (Council Liaison); Robert Miller, Higley Unified School District

CALL TO ORDER

Tim Keefe called the meeting to order at 9:00 a.m.

Cathy Templeton introduced Robert Miller, Higley Unified School District, and advised that he will be the new representative for the district. Robert?s appointment to the Board is anticipated on September 27, 2005.

MINUTES

Approval of the Minutes of the Meeting of May 6, 2004

A MOTION was made Roger Carter, seconded by Cathy Templeton, to approve the minutes of the meeting of January 13, 2005. Motion carried 5-0.

NEW BUSINESS

2. Tour of the new Chandler Educational Television Facility at Chandler High School

Michael Holland led a tour and showcased the new Chandler Educational Television (CET) facility and its equipment. The facility is approximately 7,000 square feet and CET currently has 3.5 employees including Michael. The facility was constructed using Chandler Unified School District bonds. Councilmember Crozier joined the tour and was introduced to the Board members. Linda Tunick advised that Gilbert High School is beginning a broadcast class.

Michael Holland briefly discussed the evolution of CET. The channel was established in 1989 to broadcast Spanish language and evolved over time. Today, the channel is operated 24 hours per day, seven days per week. Michael Holland explained that any partner school district, charter school, or public school or institution can use the channel for programming. He briefly reviewed the type of programming that runs on the channel and includes broadcast of school board meetings for Kyrene, Tempe, and Chandler School Districts. Robert Miller commented that there may be a desire to broadcast taped Higley Unified School District board meetings. Michael Holland advised there are certain guidelines and copyright restrictions that must be followed for programming. A brief discussion took place on potential partnerships to provide professional development training to the schools so they could take advantage of the opportunity to broadcast on the channel.

Future Meeting
The next meeting of the GECAGB will be held on Thursday, April 20, 2006 at 9:00 a.m. The meeting location will be Chandler High School, Vocational Education Building, 350 North Arizona Avenue, Chandler, Arizona.

COMMUNICATIONS

From the CHAIR on current events.

Tim Keefe advised that Chandler Gilbert Community College is planning for expansion of the Sun Lakes facility the expansion will result in the facility being closed for about one year. A Nursing Program is being added to the Williams Campus. The Community College District approved projects for the next 10 years and had a successful bond election. One project involves the expansion of the Pecos campus.

Linda Tunick advised that Gilbert High School is developing its broadcasting facility.

Roger Carter advised that ASU is currently running classes on Cox Channel 116. ASU is also working to partner with a company to set up broadband in the Valley and is currently negotiating with Sprint. ASU will maintain its television classes as long as needed.

A MOTION was made by Michael Holland, seconded by Linda Tunick, to adjourn the meeting. Motion carried 5-0. Tim Keefe adjourned the meeting 10:02 a.m.
